Austin Environmental Dems vote to support the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex!

 

 

Austin Environmental Democrats Civil and Family Courts Complex Resolution

WHEREAS, the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex will be designed to

comply with Travis County’s Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) Program1.

WHEREAS, the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex will be certified LEED

Silver2 or higher, ensuring that the energy and water impacts of the building’s operations

over its lifetime are minimized; and

WHEREAS, the site of the proposed new Civil and Family Courthouse was selected to

coincide with 54 bus routes, the most of any block in the City of Austin, allowing Travis

County residents to utilize mass transit thus reducing the number of tailpipe emissions

related to commuters to and from the Courts Complex; and

WHEREAS, the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex will be take advantage

of new technology allowing the HVAC system to recycle water, reducing the over water

usage of the building; and

WHEREAS, the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex will be outfitted with a

rainwater capture system designed to supplement irrigation, thus reducing the building’s

usage of water; and

WHEREAS, the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex will be capable of using

recycled water from the “purple pipeline” for use in the HVAC system; and

WHEREAS, the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex will be constructed with

non-reflective glass to minimize heat transfer to Republic Square Park; and

WHEREAS, the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex will be minimally

impactful to the historical Auction Oaks of Republic Square Park, preserving an

important part of Austin’s urban canopy; and

WHEREAS, the depth of the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex parking

garage was determined based on a variety of environmental factors including: depth

and location of the Edwards Aquifer and other subterranean strata; and

WHEREAS, the site of the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex was

historically used as a railway for the transportation of coal and other environmentally

damaging substances, Travis County has required that the project include proper

cleanup and disposal of any environmentally impactful chemicals.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Austin Environmental Democrats

endorse the proposed new Civil and Family Courts Complex and being necessary and

important infrastructure; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Austin Environmental Democrats support the

measures taken by Travis County to ensure that the proposed new Civil and Family

Courts Complex complies with the values of environmentally responsible infrastructure;

and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Austin Environmental Democrats supports the

investment of public money and the bond that will go before Travis County voters in

November of 2015 to build the Civil and Family Courts Complex.
